She went to Germany to learn about nursing. She looked after sick people and helped them during operations. In 1854, Britain entered the Crimean War. Florence were there to helped the wounded soldiers, She cleaned up the dirty hospital and made it safe. She made the deaf percent sank to 40& to 2%. She was kind to the soldiers and she talked to them and gave them hope. Every night she used to go with a lamp around the hospital and that's how she got the nickname. “The Lady with the Lamp”.
After
the war she wrote a book how to make hospital better. She thought
nurses should learn through both experience and training and in 1860,
she opened a school for nurses.
Florence died in London when she was 90 years old and on her
gravestone it says “F.N Born 1820. Died 1910. She didn't want any
other memorial.
